Foreigners who are subject to visa requirements and who wish to enter the Schengen Area with the primary purpose of staying in Slovakia, are required to submit an application for visa at the local Slovak Embassy or Consulate-General. If the foreigner has a residence permit in other country than the country of his nationality, he/she can apply for visa at the Embassy / Consulate-General in the country of his current residence.

The term visa mean specific permission or license granted from state to person that allows foreigner to enter the country, repeatedly cross the borders, or transit the area of state.

By applying for Slovak Visa, a foreigner applies for so-called Schengen Visa which allows this person to travel inside of the Schengen Area without any restrictions. Schengen Visa holders do not need additional special visa for Slovak republic.

Schengen Area is known as area of European Union, in which is conducted free movement of persons, goods, services and capital. Inside the Schengen Area there are no border controls between Schengen member states. Slovakia is part of the Schengen Area – territory of 23 countries of the European Union + 2 associated countries of the European Economic Area, which agreed on the abolition of border controls between themselves and on common visa regulations.
